Fuel Gas Efficiency

Fuel gas is natural gas that is used by upstream operations in the production, transportation and processing of oil and natural gas.

Better management of fuel gas and implementation of conservation measures has many positive outcomes for Albertans.  Even  a 10 per cent reduction in fuel gas use would:

  • Save the energy industry an estimated $150 million a year (assuming $3.25 per gigajoule);

  • Conserve enough natural gas to heat more than 300,000 homes for a year; and

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 2.1 million tonnes per year, the equivalent of taking 500,000 cars off the road.

The Alberta government and industry have been working together to look at best ways to reduce energy consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions during oil and gas extraction.

This collaboration resulted in the development of the Fuel Gas best management practicesexternal link icon (BMP on CAPP) which contains seventeen modules intended to provide practical guidance to operators on what they can do to reduce fuel gas consumption.
